At just 17 years old, Beauty Kapinga is already a powerful example of growth, courage, and leadership. A learner at our partnering school, Gardens Commercial High School, Beauty joined the MOT programme in 2022 at the age of 13.
What began as a step into the unknown soon became a life‑changing journey of self-discovery.
This month, we are proud to celebrate Beauty as our Youth Blogger of the Month and share her inspiring story of finding her voice through MOT.
Here is Beauty’s story:
My name is Beauty Kapinga, I’m 17 years old, and I’m a learner at Gardens Commercial High School in Cape Town. I joined the MOT programme in 2022 when I was just 13 years old. At the time, I didn’t really know what to expect, but something inside me told me this was a special opportunity, one that could help shape me into a better leader and a stronger version of myself.
From the very beginning, MOT became a space where I could grow. The programme helped me build confidence and courage in ways I didn’t even realise I needed. Through the MOT Sessions I was a part of, I learned how to truly connect with my peers and mentors. I began to understand people better, not just who they were on the surface, but what shaped them underneath.
One of the most impactful moments of my MOT journey was in 2024, when I, along with other Young MOTivaters [youth leaders], was selected to attend the Young MOTivators’ Education Camp [Youth Leadership Camp].
This experience pushed me completely out of my comfort zone. I was never the kind of person who easily spoke to new people, and the idea of being surrounded by unfamiliar faces honestly scared me. But when I arrived, something shifted. I felt a new wave of energy and courage rise within me.
The camp activities weren’t just fun, they were meaningful. They helped me connect with MOTivaters from all kinds of backgrounds, and that’s when I truly realised that everyone carries their own courageous story.
This is where one MOT tool stood out and carried me through the experience: the Invisible Backpack. It taught me that everyone’s backpack has its own weight, and that we can’t expect our burdens or struggles to look the same as the next person’s. That lesson stayed with me long after the camp ended and changed the way I see and treat others.
After graduating from the MOT programme, I often heard people say, “There’s something different about you, Beauty.” At first, I never knew how to respond, usually I’d just joke and say, “Do you like my new braids?” But deep down, I started to feel that change too. I was confused at first, and even a little scared. Change can be uncomfortable. But I later realised that this change was a good thing.
Today, I carry myself with more confidence. I speak with greater compassion. I face situations with determination instead of fear. MOT didn’t just teach me leadership skills, it helped me find my voice, understand others, and believe in the person I’m becoming.
And for that, I will always be grateful to be part of the MOT family. 💙
